June 2013
WORKSHOP: Yummy Heros
INSTRUCTORS:  Jackie Ivie & Teresa Bodwell
DATE:  June 3 - 18, 2013
TYPE: Mini, (2 week) classes, consisting of at least 2 lessons per week
COST: $10 for CRW and HCRW members, all others $20

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: It is almost a truism in romance that our readers must relate to the heroine and fall in love with the hero. This workshop will focus on techniques the romance writer can use to portray her hero, how to depict him, who he is, and define those traits, characteristics, and nuances that make him a hero. Who is this man that will have readers swooning and turning the pages wanting more?  This workshop answers that and more!

INSTRUCTOR BIOS:
Jackie Ivie is a native of Utah and attended the University of Utah on a full scholarship in Fine Art.  She relocated to Wyoming for several years before moving to Alaska, where she lives with her husband, Two dogs, and the cat who is in charge of it all.  Now retired, she spends her days puttering around with needle crafts, music, drawing, gardening, and reading.  And if that doesn’t keep her occupied, she can be found researching and then writing about larger than life heroes and heroines, in other magnificent centuries, amid the grandeur of history…all while glancing occasionally at the magnificent, snow-capped mountain views through her windows. Jackie's newest titles for 2012 are SHOULD THERE BE, Vampire Assassin League #8 to be released in July, A PERFECT KNIGHT FOR LOVE, Book 9 in The Clans series and HIGHLAND HUNGER, Anthology are scheduled for release in September. You can visit Jackie at her website: http://www.jackieivie.com/

Teresa Bodwell lives in the West, where the mountains, rivers and sweeping plains inspire her stories of rugged characters. Tough heroines and courageous heroes who struggle for survival, for family and for love. She served in the U.S. Army where she helped make the world safe for John Phillip Sousa marches. After leaving the service, she received a BA from UCLA and went on to law school at the University of Oregon. As an attorney she has learned that life can be unfair and a happy outcome is not always possible. She enjoys writing stories where happy endings are guaranteed.

The names may change and even some of what they can do, but whatever you call them, the legends about vampires and werewolves have long been a part of human history. Let's look at those myths around the world following the Silk Road, that series of routes that was integral to traders long before the Christian era began. We'll look at vampires and werewolves in places you would never suspect and those you would, starting in Hollywood, CA, home of Tinkerbell, and jumping over to the British Isles and Europe, heading south to the Easts, Near and Middle and Far, and go beyond.

July 2013

WORKSHOP: Do You Make Comparisons that Make Sense?
INSTRUCTOR: MM Pollard
DATE: July 8-21, 2013
TYPE: Mini, (2 week) classes, consisting of at least 2 lessons per week
COST: $10 for CRW and HCRW members, all others $20

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: Are those nitpicky rules you learned in English class a part of your management plan, or are they locked away in the deep recesses of your memory?

What you don’t know can hurt you when it comes to grammar rules. When you don’t use grammatically correct English, you might as well tell a publisher you don’t care enough to get it right.

During this two-week workshop, you will learn the necessary rules to manage your adverbs and adjectives. You will have a chance to practice each lesson; in other words, you’ll have homework. MM will personally give you feedback on every assignment you post. Think of homework as an opportunity for a mini-edit by an editor and English teacher (MM).

INSTRUCTOR BIO:
As an English teacher for fifteen years and, currently, as acquisitions editor for Black Velvet Seductions, MM Pollard has taught writers how to find and correct ungrammatical grammar, misused usage, problematic punctuation, and poor writing in their own work.

Since 2011, MM has helped many writers improve their language and writing skills through her fun workshops. Yes, the basics of English composition can be fun! She has presented workshops on Writers Online Classes, Savvy Authors, Orange County RWA, Passionate Ink RWA, and Celtic Hearts RWA, just to name a few, as well as in her own virtual classroom. She is sure she can help you, too, master the fundamentals of English composition.

August 2013

WORKSHOP: Using Sentence Recipes to Add Variety to Your Writing
INSTRUCTOR: MM Pollard
DATE: August 5 - 31, 2013
TYPE: Regular (4 week) classes, consisting of at least 2 lessons per week
COST: $15 for CRW and HCRW members, all others $25

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: When I was growing up, “doctoring” wasn’t so much about giving aspirin as it was about reaching for spices and herbs. My mom was a wonderful cook who loved to “doctor” a recipe, using the rest of the family as guinea pigs. I am happy to say, none of us died… or even came close.

In this workshop you will learn how to “doctor” your writing by trying different sentence recipes and then adding variety to the new ones as well as to the ones you usually use.

During the four-week workshop, MM Pollard, acquisitions editor, BVS, will present ten sentence patterns and introduce ways to vary basic sentence structure. You will have homework so that you can practice using the patterns with MM looking over your shoulder (in a good, not creepy way).
Your reward for doing your homework: MM’s personal feedback. Think of homework as opportunities for mini edits.

TYPE: Regular, (Month-long) classes, consisting of at least 2 lessons per week
COST: $15 for CRW and HCRW members, all others $25 Title of Workshop:

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: Capitalize on this technique marketing gurus have used for years to find the "thought not thought of yet" and avoid duplicating a plot line, character quirk or other idea already out there (that you may have seen subconsciously). Then learn how to use this technique to take your writing deeper and draw out more emotion, more conflict...more of everything! It's truly astounding when you see it in action. With this interactive class, New York Times bestselling author Shirley Jump will show you how to use "Shirley's Rule of Six" for everything from plot to word choice. The result? More powerful writing that has that unique touch editors today are looking to buy.

INSTRUCTOR BIO: New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Shirley Jump spends her days writing women’s fiction and romantic comedies (One Day to Find a Husband, July 2012) to feed her shoe addiction and avoid cleaning the toilets. As AJ Whitten (www.ajwhitten.com), she also writes horror young adult novels for Houghton Mifflin’s Graphia imprint with her daughter (The Cellar, May 2011). She cleverly finds writing time by feeding her kids junk food, allowing them to dress in the clothes they find on the floor and encouraging the dogs to double as vacuum cleaners. October 2013

WORKSHOP:   Tips and Techniques for More Effective Proofreading
INSTRUCTORS:  Ally Broadfield
DATE: October  21 - November 17, 2013
TYPE: Regular, (Month-long) classes, consisting of at least 2 lessons per week
COST: $15 for CRW and HCRW members, all others $25 Title of Workshop:

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:  Editing is one of the most difficult tasks a writer faces and even seasoned authors often have difficultly detecting errors in their own work. When writers proofread their own work, it’s not unusual for them to overlook errors because their mind knows how the text should read and automatically corrects it. Whether you’re polishing your manuscript for a contest, preparing to submit to an agent or editor, or planning to self-publish, knowing how to effectively proofread your work is an essential skill. This is not a grammar class, but rather focuses on what you need to know to identify errors with capitalization, punctuation, sentence structure, verb tense, dialogue, homonyms, and plural and possessive forms. At the end of class, you will have a customized proofreading checklist. A list of grammar resources will also be provided.

INSTRUCTOR BIO:
A graduate of The George Washington University, Ally Broadfield is a former school librarian who runs her own freelance proofreading business. Her first manuscript she didn’t consign to the dust bunnies under her bed is currently on submission. She writes historical romance and middle grade and young adult paranormal/fantasy romance, and is an active member of SCBWI and several RWA chapters, including YARWA, FF&P, HHRW and NTRWA.
